Skiathos Wool 2024

From the second half of September to the end of the first week of October (dates are dependent on flights) we will be offering at least one five day programme. We aim to be flexible to accommodate the weather, connecting flights and group/individual needs and specific interests

Our basic model includes the following:

  • Accommodation for 7 nights in twin (shared) room
  • Airport transfers and internal transport
  • Lunches and evening meals for 5 days
  • 4x4 vehicle tour of the island and guided walk
  • Access to museums and exhibitions
  • 4 days in our fully equipped textile workshop covering all aspects of wool
  • 35+ years of experience of visiting Skiathos
  • 20 years experience of working with wool

Selection of possible activities:

  • Sheep shearing (Spring sessions only), meet the local sheep and hear tales from the shepherds (also your hosts!)
  • Visit to local small scale sheep farm to see milking and cheesemaking
  • Fleece selection, washing and drying
  • Wool processing - using the swing picker, drum carders and blending or making rolags on hand carders
  • Spinning - using hand spindles and/or spinning wheels
  • Feltmaking - wet feltmaking flat forms such as pictures and mats or 3D wet feltmaking hats, bags or bowls
  • Feltmaking - needlefelting embellishments or 3D objects
  • Feltmaking - using a cotted fleece to make a no-skin sheepskin rug
  • Weaving - pegloom weaving seat pads or small rugs using carded fleece
  • Weaving - upright floor loom weaving design and set up, eg for table runners or wall hangings
  • Weaving - incorporating island motifs in rug making
  • Weaving - free-form wall hangings on driftwood
  • Dyeing - eco-printing using foraged plants
  • Dyeing - on yarn with Kool Aid
  • Dyeing - using acid milling dyes for protein fibres

Guided cultural tours of the island:

By feet - Skiathos Spiti private museum, the home of iconic Greek writer Papadiamantis, the Church of the Three Hierarchs and The Bourtsee.

By car and feet - Evangalistria Monastery and Museum (the home of the first Greek flag), old town historical beach.site of Kastro, Mandraki protected forest and Elias

Phoenix Projects team members include Jean Wildish (56, textile artist), Arthur Charman (67, electrical engineer and Skiathos homeowner) and Mac (5, our super-friendly lab/springer welcoming committee and welfare officer).

Due to the personal and flexible nature of this programme, we are reluctant to advertise costs initially.

Our program is tailored to your individual requirements using our combined knowledge and experience here on Skiathos.

We suggest you should expect a budget between 1000 to 1500 euros per person.

We aim to give you a safe, memorable and emersed experience here on the Island.
